Our South Elgin Naturopathic Wellness Center

Olive Branch Wellness Center focuses on alternative medicine. Specifically, we practice something called naturopathy. Our lead doctor is Dr. Ray, a naturopath with a multi-generational family history of alternative care. She holds a Doctor of Naturopathy degree and has many years of experience working directly with patients.

Naturopathy is a specific approach to medical care, and it is not defined by any single type of technique. It’s a holistic focus that considers the value of many different ways of promoting wellness. Some of the things that might go into your care plan could include:

  • Diet and nutrition
  • Therapeutic exercise and physical therapy
  • Lifestyle changes
  • Herbal and botanical care
  • Infrared sauna
  • Massage therapy

It’s all about what your specific situation indicates. Your wellness is a personal thing, and we take the time to understand everything that could contribute to it.

Getting to Olive Branch From Bartlett

If you’re in downtown Bartlett, it’s only about 15 or 20 minutes to our office. Your best option is to head south on Main Street/Bartlett Road until Stearns. You’ll head west on Stearns until you get to the shopping center on the corner of Stearns/McDonald and Randall Road.

Then, you’re basically here already — it just so happens that our office is right there in that commercial area. You can either turn into the parking lot or head south again until you get to Thornwood Avenue. You’ll take the second right onto Briargate Drive, and our office will be in the second building on your right.

If you see the second group of big-box stores, you’ve gone too far — but don’t worry. The entire complex is connected, so feel free to turn into it at any point, grab a parking spot, and give us a call for specific directions.

What Is Naturopathic Care?

Naturopathy is a specific approach to wellness, we prioritize non-invasive, gentle, natural techniques.. By focusing on care for the whole person, we promote overall wellness and vitality. We don’t prescribe medications that simply suppress symptoms, for example.

So — are naturopaths really doctors? Naturopaths study for years to obtain their doctoral credentials. However, licensing is not universal yet in the United States. One region that does not offer a naturopathy license is, unfortunately, Illinois. There are, however, national standards for education in naturopathy — and Dr. Ray has a doctorate from one of these nationally accredited institutions.

With support from national organizations, care providers, and patients, the trend has been towards licensing. Until then, it’s important to look at each individual wellness center before you decide to become a patient.

Licensing doesn’t mean that a doctor’s services will “work”. In fact, it’s unethical for any medical care provider to promise a specific outcome. What we can promise at Olive Branch is that you’ll feel great about the way you’re treated.

The Therapeutic Order and Prioritizing Whole-Body Care

Naturopaths follow an order of care called the therapeutic order. Here’s an outline:

  • Enabling wellness: Identifying the barriers you might have to obtaining wellness and vitality and working to remove those barriers.
  • Stimulating the body’s natural ability to be well: We believe the body has a natural tendency to seek the highest possible level of vitality — but sometimes it needs a nudge in the right direction.
  • Supporting weakened systems: Sometimes, more active care is necessary to start the body’s systems back on a path towards wellness.
  • Natural care and comfort: Discomfort can teach us exactly what is standing in the way of wellness, but it can also be a barrier by itself. Natural relief sometimes helps.

There is no single type of care process or technique in naturopathy. Instead, we listen to your wellness challenges and follow this order to help you work towards the level of vitality you want.

Things To Do In Bartlett (and Chicago)

Bartlett has a charming, vibrant downtown which is really the heart of the city. If you’re looking to do some shopping or browse a bit, we’d recommend the local products and boutiques at The Shoppes of Banbury Fair. Apart from the year-round shopping, there are plenty of seasonal events downtown. Make sure to check the schedules online so you don’t miss anything.

Bartlett also has a Metra rail station right downtown which takes you directly to the heart of Chicago. There, you have countless world-class sports, cultural, and entertainment options, all within an easy day trip.

Bartlett History and Landmarks

The area around Bartlett, like much of the Chicago area, has been home to a wide variety of people and political groups. However, the big event in Bartlett’s contemporary civic history was the construction of the railroad.

Back in 1873, a landowner named Luther Bartlett donated a 40-acre plot of land along the railroad right-of-way. As you might expect, he also got to choose the name of the village that would eventually form around his depot.

As a matter of fact, the old train depot is now a museum. It’s definitely worth a quick visit if you’re in the area. You don’t get this type of information in your typical US History class in school — it’s always interesting to learn about the people and stories of a specific place. Our history and tradition are always part of who we are.

Natural Recreation in the Bartlett Area

Our neck of the woods here in Kane County is defined by forest preserves, trails, and parks. Bartlett specifically has Wayne Grove, Hawk Hollow, Herons Woods, and the Bartlett Nature Center. The Nature Center in particular has great programs for families, with special sessions with themes ranging from homeschool nature enrichment to maple syrup production. There’s also plenty of golf, as well as the nearby Fox River trail.

Natural recreation can sometimes be a major contributor to wellness. Luckily, there’s plenty of it here in the Bartlett area. Of course, your ideal level and type of activity depend on your unique situation.

What To Expect On Your First Visit

Whether you’re thinking about trying a holistic wellness center or you’ve been to several, Olive Branch might be different than you expect. Our first consultation is a relatively involved getting-to-know-you meeting. It will last about an hour, but people usually say that the time flies right by.

You don’t necessarily need to bring much to prepare. However, we might ask you some questions that you don’t expect from your conventional medical providers. We really do want to get to know you as well as possible, so we can start guiding you on your path towards the wellness you want.
