Do we really learn from our own history or are we blinded by what we want to know about foods? Do you know how your body handles food and especially how it handles certain foods? Most people will think that organic is fine and everything is fine in moderation. But do you really know where your body chemistry is at, or are you just justifying what you want to eat? These are some of the tough ideas we are going to cover here.
Seasonal Abundance Of Fruit
This is the time of the year I hear a lot about fruit in my South Elgin Wellness Center office. Everyone has an opinion on what is the best fruit out there, where to purchase it from and how to make it the sweetest. Most people are getting excited about watermelon and other melons right about now and some berries because they are coming into the ripe part of the growing season.
You know that sales pitch, “fresh off the vine and ripe sweet taste”. A few days ago I was listening to someone go on and on in my office about her love of fruit. “Oh it’s just delicious and every year I can’t wait for the fruit to ripen so I can eat it all (giggle, giggle).”
Sigh from me.
“Don’t worry Dr. Ray, I’m not eating candy or drinking pop anymore, I’m eating healthy fruit and getting lots of vitamin C”. After listening to the quantity of fruit and how often she was eating it I thought I was going to go into a sugar coma for her! It actually surpassed eating a bag of candy!
So what’s wrong with fruit?
Excess Fructose Can Be Unhealthy
The fructose is the problem. Fructose is the sugar in fruit and its juices. When you eat the whole piece of fruit (not the peeled or juiced fruit) you can actually slow down the hit of the fructose because you are getting some of the fiber with the fruit.
When you juice or you are just eating the “meat of the fruit” you are getting a straight hit of fructose and that sends your body into a tizzy. Did you know that one in three people are unable to process fructose even if they eat the fruit fiber with it?
Yep, one in three. That usually means you, if you want to look at this properly, cannot process fructose! To make matters worse fructose can be more harmful than sugar. Want to know what that looks like when you eat fructose and cannot process it properly? Here’s the list of what it looks like; nausea, bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, low blood sugar, insulin resistance, obesity, liver disorders, diabetes, brain fog, arthritis, and gout.
Three Ways To Reduce The Problems From Excess Fruit
Now that we’ve talked about the problems with fruit, let’s give you three easy ways to reduce the issues that fruit gives you.
- First of all one serving of fruit per day is more than enough. You don’t need a plate full of fruit or a huge glass of fruit juice (which we can talk about another time). One serving = 1 piece of fruit!
- Secondly, if you are going to have the fruit eat the fruit at lunchtime and I’m going to recommend only berries. Yes, you heard me right berries (avocados, cucumbers, and tomatoes are okay for other meals as well as olives).
- Thirdly get your liver and gut healed up. The fructose is processed in the liver and if your liver is whacked out you will probably start having more problems than you know what to do with.
- Lastly, if you are doing all of these things and you are still experiencing some of the symptoms described in this blog, guess what? Fruit might not be right for you!
